A Brief Look into IZTECH’s History, the Academic Staff and the Campus İzmir Institute of Technology is one of the state universities in Turkey and one that was established in 1992 with a view to offering a high level of education and carrying out research in technological fields. The medium of education at our Institute is English. It is one of the two Turkish institutes of technology, which are the most advanced models of technical universities in today’s world. Having first started with graduate programs in 1994 in the center of İzmir, the faculties have been admitting students to undergraduate programs as well since 1998. By 1999, the institute gradually started moving to its campus area in Urla near Gülbahçe village from the center of İzmir, where it had functioned since its foundation. Our institute, covering approximately 3,500 hectares of land, has a closed area of about 132,000 square meters for educational and research activities, and it is still developing. İzmir Institute of Technology offers both graduate and undergraduate education to students at

  • Faculty of Engineering
  • Faculty of Science
  • Faculty of Architecture
  • Graduate School of Engineering & Sciences

At our institute educational and research activities are carried out in 10 undergraduate, 25 master’s and 12 doctorate programs with a total of 2,200 students, 1600 of which are here for their undergraduate education. It should also be noted that 6 of the master’s and 2 of the doctorate programs are interdisciplinary. All educational and research activities conform to international norms. With our student and project-based educational methods, our mission is to pave the way for contemporary individuals who will be able to produce the necessary technologies for their country with their creativity, research ability and success in teamwork. Graduates are highly appreciated both within the country and abroad, and we can justifiably boast that they are admitted to top master’s programs with scholarships. Besides this, from very early years, our students are encouraged to study in fully equipped laboratories for their personal development in the related fields. Currently, there are approximately 100 research projects supported by the State Planning Office (abbreviated as DPT in Turkish) and the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (abbreviated as TÜBİTAK in Turkish). Additionally, nearly 300 research projects are backed by IZTECH Research Funds. Thus, it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that our Institute enriches the world science by contributing to universal knowledge. Apart from this, in accordance with its mission to encourage production of high added value, our Institute is also home to the İzmir Technology Development Zone, which has become synonymous with the institute itself. Within this zone, about 70 firms operate in their relevant fields, which gives our students the chance to both take part in the research and serve their internships. In this way, they sometimes enjoy the privilege of making future work contacts or even start their professional lives by setting up their own businesses within the zone.
