Analytical chemistry is a branch of natural science and is based not only on all the chemical disciplines but also on physics, biology, the theory of information and a number of technical disciplines. It provides information on the identity, structure, and amounts of components in natural and man-made objects and on their distribution in space and time. It cooperates with other fields of natural science in seeking relationships between the chemical composition of substances and their properties. It is an applied multidisciplinary science with a number of feedbacks that accents teamwork in the solution of problems. It requires mastering of sufficient background in a number of disciplines, such as general and physical chemistry, physics, mathematics, inorganic and organic chemistry and biochemistry, and, of course, a thorough knowledge of the theory of analytical chemistry and of modern instrumental analytical methods. In view of the experimental character of analytical chemistry, an important role is played by practical capabilities and manual skills. -

The discipline is focused on physical anthropology and human biology, genetics, ecology, and ethology. It deals predominantly with ontogenetic and phylogenetic development of man, morphological variability and evolution of populations, ethnic anthropology and ethnology, human growth and its disorders, body composition and nutrition, the action of environmental and social factors on man, human behavior and with characteristics at various levels of the biologic organization and their heredity. Molecular genetics includes analyses of different human receptor genes and genetic polymorphisms in variable regions of human chromosomes. Applied specialties include forensic, functional, clinical and industrial anthropology. Special position occupies skeletal and dental anthropology. -

Students entering this program are trained in all fields of Biochemistry including bioenergetics, enzymology, molecular biology, protein chemistry and structure, immunochemistry, xenobiochemistry (biochemistry of foreign substances), chemical and cellular fundaments of the metabolic reactions etc. Students participating in the Program are actively involved in grant-supported research projects at the Department of Biochemistry of the Faculty of Science of Charles University Prague as well as in the collaborating laboratories at the Academy of Sciences of Czech Republic, and in regional and company laboratories. The studies in the Program are successfully completed after obtaining the English Language Certificate (issued by independent organizations), and after passing the State Doctoral Examination in biochemistry and two other subjects (usually suggested by the supervisor), and the defense of the Ph.D. Thesis the important part of which is at least one publication in international peer-reviewed journal at which the candidate must be the principal author. -
