The professional doctorate is a part-time doctoral research degree. It is fully equivalent to the PhD, but substantially different from it in that it is strongly professionally oriented, focussing on ‘applied’ rather than ‘pure’ research.

Doctoral Study on Chemistry Didactics is the culmination of the three-tier university education. The Ph.D. in Cognitive Neuroscience at SISSA aims at providing students with the fundamental knowledge and skills for conducting cutting-edge research in the field, covering topics as diverse as perception, language, memory, action, and social behavior.

The goal of the ISTA PhD program is to produce intellectually broad, curious, open-minded scientists who are able to approach problems from different angles and can collaborate with diverse types of scientists. To this end, our students complete an innovative interdisciplinary training program consisting of both research and taught elements, and receive close mentoring by world-class faculty from different disciplines.

The Academy of Physical Education offers third-cycle (doctoral) studies in the field of physical education. A person with a master's degree or an equivalent degree may be admitted to studies.

The Doctoral Program in Spiritual Theology, with a minimum duration of two years, offers the student the possibility of writing a dissertation on a specific area of Spiritual Theology under the guidance of one of the professors of the Department. This program also prepares the students for teaching at the University level.
