Analytical chemistry is a branch of natural science and is based not only on all the chemical disciplines but also on physics, biology, the theory of information and a number of technical disciplines. It provides information on the identity, structure, and amounts of components in natural and man-made objects and on their distribution in space and time. It cooperates with other fields of natural science in seeking relationships between the chemical composition of substances and their properties. It is an applied multidisciplinary science with a number of feedbacks that accents teamwork in the solution of problems. It requires mastering of sufficient background in a number of disciplines, such as general and physical chemistry, physics, mathematics, inorganic and organic chemistry and biochemistry, and, of course, a thorough knowledge of the theory of analytical chemistry and of modern instrumental analytical methods. In view of the experimental character of analytical chemistry, an important role is played by practical capabilities and manual skills. -

The discipline is focused on physical anthropology and human biology, genetics, ecology, and ethology. It deals predominantly with ontogenetic and phylogenetic development of man, morphological variability and evolution of populations, ethnic anthropology and ethnology, human growth and its disorders, body composition and nutrition, the action of environmental and social factors on man, human behavior and with characteristics at various levels of the biologic organization and their heredity. Molecular genetics includes analyses of different human receptor genes and genetic polymorphisms in variable regions of human chromosomes. Applied specialties include forensic, functional, clinical and industrial anthropology. Special position occupies skeletal and dental anthropology. -

Students entering this program are trained in all fields of Biochemistry including bioenergetics, enzymology, molecular biology, protein chemistry and structure, immunochemistry, xenobiochemistry (biochemistry of foreign substances), chemical and cellular fundaments of the metabolic reactions etc. Students participating in the Program are actively involved in grant-supported research projects at the Department of Biochemistry of the Faculty of Science of Charles University Prague as well as in the collaborating laboratories at the Academy of Sciences of Czech Republic, and in regional and company laboratories. The studies in the Program are successfully completed after obtaining the English Language Certificate (issued by independent organizations), and after passing the State Doctoral Examination in biochemistry and two other subjects (usually suggested by the supervisor), and the defense of the Ph.D. Thesis the important part of which is at least one publication in international peer-reviewed journal at which the candidate must be the principal author. -

The field of botany covers all plant organismal sciences including mycology. Students typically specialize in one of the following fields: (i) systematics, distribution, and ecology of non-vascular plants (including fungi), (ii) biosystematics/experimental taxonomy, microevolution, phylogenetics a distribution of vascular plants, or (iii) plant ecology, vegetation science and landscape ecology (including paleoecology). The study encompasses training in modern methodological approaches, data analysis, and synthesis, and stresses participation in the scientific community, including the ability to present one's own results. Work on the Ph.D. project of the student is the core of the study. More information is available at the website of the Program Steering Committee (http://botany.natur.cuni.cz/cz/pgs/index.php). -

Demography is the scientific study of human population dynamics. It encompasses the study of the size, structure, and distribution of populations, and how populations change over time due to births, deaths, and migration including related events of marriages, divorces, and abortions. The relationships between economic, social, cultural, and biological environments and population development in terms of causes and effects (including forecasting) are the object of population studies in a broader sense. Demography compiles and analyzes data that are useful for various disciplines dealing with human populations such as economics, sociology, social medicine, anthropology, historiography, social geography, ecology, etc. Outcomes of demographic studies are important for public administration, policymaking, health service organization, educational system, insurance companies, etc. -

The subjects applied specific molecular approaches in the detailed exploration of the heredity and variability of organisms the uncovering of the structural and functional relations between information macromolecules (nucleic acids and proteins) as the basis of the existence and manifestation/expression of living matter at all levels of complexity of its organization. It is concerned with the structure and function of genes, the biosynthesis of proteins as gene products – gene expression and its regulation. -

The doctoral study provides integrated education, allowing its absolvents to perform conceptual and research activity in the chemical education field because of their high erudition. The absolvents of the doctoral study will be ready for independent scientific, pedagogical, and coordination work in this field. The absolvents, will be able to use their skills at didactic places of work at universities and colleges which prepare Chemistry teachers, in the research institutes of Czech Ministry of Education which concern themselves with the chemical education problematics, in workplaces of institutions and organizations focused on postgraduate teacher education, in national and international institutions and organizations focused on state-wide or international research in chemical or science education (Division of Chemical Education EuCheMS, European Science Education Research Association, International Organization of Science and Technology Education, International Council of Associations for Science Education etc.). -

Ecology is dealing with interactions of groups of organisms related to their abiotic environment. The study is general, i. e. including all groups of taxonomic units. Projects with predominantly biotic interactions have priority over the study of the abiotic environment: populations and community ecology, the study of ecosystems. -

The program reflects a general public demand to understand and analyze mechanisms of adverse changes to the environment and find ways to mitigate them. The key aim of the study is a detailed analysis of the current state of the environment, identification of principal pollutants, dynamics, transport processes, and transformation among the various environmental compartments. An important aspect of the study is identification of biotic and abiotic processes, phenomena, species, and/or their groups (and their combinations) which may through the mediation of their state, behavior or a certain mechanism assist in early recognition of an unwilling disruption of a given environmental system (air, water, soil, biota, etc.). -

General Issues in Geography as a program of doctoral studies constitute an effort to find the touching/intersected topics that link the previous programs of doctoral studies. In fact, the rapid development of geographic fields in the past half a century brought about their exceptional differentiation, while the common denominator of the individual fields was weakened. -
